THE YELLOW CAFE IN SINGAPORE

Location: Elbow Room by Drinks & Co, 44 Club Street, Singapore 069421

Duration: 2.5 days Total walls : 4 Period : 26-28 December, 2018

What a nice way to end 2018! A most memorable experience for me. I am truly grateful to the cafe / pub owner for selecting me to do four murals at his premises. Situated right smack in the heart of the Raffles business district at Club Street, it’s a cool place for office workers, bankers, to chill especially on Friday nights where the place really comes alive! The road is blocked specially on this night for the revellers on TGIF! It was my second at an F & B joint and as I was deciding and talking to the owner as to what to paint on the wall, the renowned Yellow Cafe came to mind!

The blank first wall at the entrance. The background of the walls were in red but I painted over it as I went along.

The finished first wall. Wanted to show the yellow cafe with a local twist by adding local elements in it.

So this is at the junction of Club Street. Moving from the main road at the entrance, we see this couple by the side chatting away. Can you recognize the man? He is looking intently at this Chinese girl and is someone who didn’t have any luck at all with women! so maybe a Chinese girl might be more suitable for him…:-) I wanted to paint happy images and pictures that bring hope for either the viewer or the people drawn based on their background. The wall painted I decided not to add the two men as I wanted to focus on the mascot which is the cat. And in addition, I have painted over the left mini cupboard which is actually a compartment for the light switches. There was a key hanging outside and Eureka! I thought of painting it like a post box with letters and added details like the leaves, and the lamp to give it a warm glow and cosy feeling as a cafe should be…

The fourth sketch of the larger wall after the wall where the cat is. It’s showing people looking out as if it’s a window from a cafe. The people are in there to give the impression of looking out from the inside and they represent the customers who will be sitting around there too. This wall shows Segovia which is a UNESCO heritage located in Spain. As the owner is a avid traveller, he liked this place so much that he wanted to bring it over here to this wall.

The combination of both walls - the side wall belongs to a house. I didn’t draw people as I wanted this place to be quiet and peopleless since the real people will be sitting there.

Like all or most of my walls, I always a cat as a mascot to the place. Cats are preferred as there are stray cats but no or rare to see stay dogs around…I was tempted to draw a black cat like the one drawn at a cafe in Paris Chat Noir or Black Cat…but changed to color instead.

The bar that houses all the liquors here and the prices are very reasonable here hence the crowd. I don’t drink but understand that these liquors are at wholesale prices but you may want to check it out and ask them when you are there…It’s worth a visit cos the ambience is really nice. You can also order food which is catered by a sister club down the road…
